Tom and Bill Kaulitz on the October issue cover

One wouldn't expect such fresh, almost adolescent curiosity on the handsome faces of Bill and Tom Kaulitz, the minds and hearts behind Tokio Hotel. They walk around the decadent rooms of Palazzo Biscuri, the splendid 18th Century palazzo in Catania, Sicily where the photo shoot took place, almost meekly, as if they don't want to disturb the "genius loci".

Considering their success, with a million records sold worldwide (the most recent, Humanoid, on the Universal label, having come out exactly a year ago), it would seem natural for these two young fellows - who have done so much at such a young age - to take everything for granted. And instead it's just the opposite: they seem shocked to find themselves here. "This palace is magnificent, an artistic treasure. There aren't places like this where we come from," says Bill with a slightly embarrassed smile.

He's referring to the East German village of Magdeburg, where the Tokio Hotel fairy tale began ten years ago. Already at the age of seven, the Kaulitz twins were playing guitar and experimenting with extravagant looks, which made them stand out as outsiders at school. Tom was obsessed with Aerosmith and the guitarist Joe Perry, while Bill was a huge fan of David Bowie and fascinated by the transformative talent of the "White Duke".

On the cover: For Tom. Tuxedo and shirt, Lanvin; jeans DSquared2; shoes Hey Day Footwear. For Bill. Suit Lanvin; bowtie Franco Jacassi; jewelry Sevan Bicakci; boots Rick Owens. Photo by Pierpaolo Ferrari. Fashion editor Robert Rabensteiner.

Christina Stürmer talks about Bill

Christina Stürmer talks about her wax statue first...

[...]

Interviewer: Can you tell us which other wax statues you already saw?

Christina: Uh, I already saw Bono, right by my side there; Madonna; Bill Kaulitz; Beyonce – right there; they are all international stars, I think you can just feel well there. [...]

Interviewer: You're always on the road and you already met a lot of colleagues. Is there any where you would say "I would really like to see this person in real"? And why?

Christina: Who comes in my mind, spontaneously now, is Bill Kaulitz. Because last time I saw him live and in color.. I think that was 5 years ago. And they were just at their beginning, the boys were insanely little, actually.. and at their very beginning. When I look at Bill's wax statue now.. he became huge! I think he's 1,80 m tall now, or even 1,90 m. And.. it would just interest me now, because I know him only when he was little and now he's from the height bigger and in the music business bigger.

Interviewer: Were there sparks flying between you and him?

Christina: Pardon?

Interviewer: Were there sparks flying between you and him?

Christina: In what way?

Interviewer: Uhm.. could you imagine that Bill Kaulitz is attractive to you as a man?

Christina: Uhm... noo, I have a boyfriend since 4 years, he's a totally different type. It would just interest me in principle, I find he has changed extremely, and as I said, I only saw him live and in color before all that rejoicing and embrace. It would interest me what he's like, today.

Bill and Tom move to America!

As BILD found out, the famous twins will be moving to Los Angeles in the fall already. Together with their manager and producer David Jost, who has been living in Beverly Hills for over a year now, they want to write new songs.
David Jost verified to BILD: "Yes, Bill and Tom will move to Los Angeles for starters, but they will still keep their home in Germany. the move to LA is planned for half November."

Their bandcollegues Georg, and Gustav, want to stay in germany because they have steady girlfriends there. Friends on the band have said that besides the planned work in the Soundstudio in LA the constant pursuit of by the stalkergangs and the break-in into their home in Hamburg are more grounds to move to the USA.

It won't get quiet for the twins in Los Angeles. The collection of stars is nowhere bigger than in Hollywood, Bill and Tom have also been hunted by paparazzis in Los Angeles.
They have sold more than 8 million CD's so far with their new DVD and their live album "Humanoid City" they have reached the 1st place in over 15 countries worldwide. In Germany, Brasil, Mexico, Columbia, France and Switzerland this year. In Italy, Portugal and Belguim they reached place 2.

Teenage magazine - october 2010 singapore

The boys of German band Tokio Hotel may appear cool and collected onstage and in their music videos, but what are the boys really like when they're not performing? Back in Singapore to perform at SINGfest, Teenage managed to steal some face time with the band to get to know them better. Chatty identical twins, Bill and Tom Kaulitz, and their band mates, Georg Listing and Gustav Schafer were very enthusiastic when it came to talking about their second performance here (which was way more explosive than the small showcase they did previously)!

"The crowd was amazing and the show was good. It was fantastic!" lead singer Bill says. His brother adds, "It was really different because we played our last tour in winter and it was freezing cold. It was easy playing two hours in the cold, but here, we could only play one hour in the heat!"

Unfortunately, due to a packed schedule, the boys were unable to watch the other performances that came before and after them, which were Wonder Girls and Katy Perry respectively. "Most of the time when you play with other artistes on the same stage, everyone has their own schedule. You're arriving just before the show and there's not much time to watch the other performances," Bill explains, to which Tom quips cheekily, "Was there a better performance that night? No!"

Now that the boys have released two English studio albums and fulfilled their dream of performing in Asia, what's next on their agenda? "We're not planning another record yet," says Bill. "But we are always in the studio collecting ideas and making music so we already have some new material. At the moment, we're still on the road with our current album, Humanoid. We want to see Tokyo. We want to visit more Asian countries and we would have to play at more concerts here."

Tokio Hotel: The Secret Files
We break down the walls and get Tokio Hotel to spill some of their secrets!

Secret #1: Do you have nicknames for each other?
Tom: We have a couple of new nicknames for Georg. We call him "Schpecky", which means fat guy. Sometimes, we also call him "Chick Georg" because his middle name is Huhn, and that means chicken in German.
Bill: This is really exclusive. I didn't even know that myself!

Secret #2: Who are the funniest and most mature members of the group?
Georg: I'm both!
Tom: Yeah, Georg is both. He's not majorly brainy but based on age, he's the oldest and most mature one. He's also the funniest one. Unfortunately, he's not funny on purpose. He's just really clumsy.

Secret #3: Who is your celebrity crush?
Tom: I don't really have one! (Bill makes a face of disbelief)
Bill: He's so in love with Jessica Alba! His room is full of posters of her. She's everywhere.
Tom: That's not true. It's not a celebrity crush because if you ask me, she'll say that her crush is Tom Kaulitz from Tokio Hotel.
Bill: She's married with a child!
Tom: Yeah but her celebrity crush is still Tom Kaulitz. I mean, she has a husband and all that but it's not important to her.
Bill: You know, I never hada celebrity crush. I think there are a lot of pretty female celebrities but I don't think I really had a crush on any of them. I really have to know their personalities first.

Secret #4: This question is for Bill and Tom. Have you ever woken up one morning and wondered if you should dress like your brother?
Tom: Never. We looked exactly the same during the first six years of our lives. But after that, we developed in completely different directions. we never thought of changing our styles.
Bill: The good thing is that we know how we would look if we were to dress like each other.
Tom: Yeah, and I just have to look at Bill to know what I'll look like with short hair.
Bill: And I can look at Tom and I know I don't want to look like that (shudders). I mean, when we were really young we would switch around sometimes.
Tom: We both had short hair, and we had these shirts with our names on them so that our teachers could tell us apart. Sometimes we would swap clothes when we were taking tests so that Bill, who was better at German than I am, could complete the tests for me.

Secret #5: What do you do when you're not performing?
Tom: We don't have a lot of free time, but when we have days off, we like to sleep long hours. If I didn't have an alarm clock to wake me, I could sleep for 24 hours.
Georg: Maybe even for the rest of your life!
Tom: Sleeping, eating and watching good DVDs. If we put all our DVDs together, we would have thousands of them! We are DVD collectors!

Bill&Tom DAA education center!

Bill And Tom Kaulitz Take Part In A New Book Benefitting The DAA Education Center!
Author: Ninette Murk
Last month we announced a new upcoming initiative from Tokio Hotel to help raise funds for Designers against AIDS and their new International HIV/AIDS Awareness Education Center (IHAEC) in Antwerp, Belgium.
Today I can reveal the project: at the end of this year, an English written book will be published by Belgian publisher Ludion about the first 10 years of the work of Designers against AIDS (including our Fashion against AIDS campaigns/collections with H&M), with 15% of every book sold going directly to the Education Center. One half of the book will deal with the most important projects of DAA (including the photo of Tokio Hotel in the FAA campaign in 2009) and in the other half of the book, over 100 well known and emerging artists give us their vision on what true beauty means to them. For this part, Bill and Tom Kaulitz donated three photos that have never been shown before, shot by themselves: one taken from the stage in Paris on July 14th in 2007 when they played for over 500.000 fans and you can see the Eiffel Tower in the background, the other two taken in the plane, on their way to their holiday in Malé.
The book will be called Designers against AIDS, The First Decade!, will cost around 25 euros and will be sold wrapped in a poster, made from 1 of the 6 best photos of the book.
Important news: if enough Tokio Hotel fans show interest in buying this book, we'll make sure they can buy it wrapped in a Tokio Hotel poster from the FAA campaign, as we believe it was one of the strongest images we had that year. If you plan to buy the book, or want to ask it as a Christmas present from your family or friends for instance, please let us know here  or on the Designers against AIDS fan page on Facebook and who knows, maybe the band can offer it for sale online on Bravado if they know you're interested! This way, many fans around the world can buy the book, enjoy it and at the same time support our work. Thanks again to Tokio Hotel! Today I saw the first lay-out of the book and it looks so fantastic and inspiring- can't wait to get my hands on a copy when it comes from the printer! Together we can make it a bestseller;-)!!!
We want to thank you already for your continuing support and are very curious to hear your reactions.
Kindest regards
Ninette
Founder/Director Designers against AIDS
PS And no, we can't show the three photos that Bill and Tom made yet- they should stay a surprise for a little while longer;-)

interview Tokio Hotel - Esch Luxembourg 22.02.2010

Translation
Bill: We're extremely nervous. Meaning, we're always extremely nervous and that also doesn't go away. I think it's just part of it. Of course, one is always nervous when walking on stage and as soon as one stands on it and begins then one relaxes relatively quickly on stage and actually just has fun. However, one has to say that we're extremely nervous prior to that.

Bill: This time the big difference is that we've got our very own stage with us. Well yes, that's basically what makes the difference. If one uses the local stage, like, the one at the venue, then, of course, it saves [money] when one doesn't have to drive it here and there. And this time we've got our very own stage with us though. Therefore it's all just a bit more elaborate.

Bill: Back in the day when I really still was quite young, like with seven, eight years, I was also standing at Nena concerts and so on, in the rain while I was waiting and so on. Meaning, definitely.

Tom: During the last phase of our album production – which took almost a year – I and Georg, we took, we just took 2 weeks off and, and passed by Jessica Alba's house with a tent and settled down. Nah, she didn't give a concert. She also didn't open the door, erm, so therefore it wasn't much of a success but those are just the little things one happens to do.

Bill: Especially Tom and I also don't know it any differently, yes? We grew up like that. We've evoked tremendous hatred in elderly people as well when we were still very young. Therefore... It's also one of those things that we enjoyed more than it was bad for us and one also has to say that we wouldn't be where we are now if we hadn't had them, the hater. So, therefore... Actually we're quite grateful for it.

Bill: Usually people hate us or they just really like it and so on and there's actually rarely anything in-between and therefore... Well, Tom and I grew up like that. Meaning, also when we weren't making any music. All we had to do was get on the school bus and the same thing was happening on there. So therefore, erm...it's actually a thing that we totally got used to.

Bill: Good question! How can one still earn money being a musician nowadays?! That is...difficult, one has to say.
Tom: We've actually got a similar problem because, erm, of course we're spending so much money for the production on tour as it is so of course we're not earning any real money with such a tour anymore and CDs are also getting less and less all the time.
Bill: So, additionally Georg has to prostitute himself on off days. *laughs* So he's, like, walking the street as well.
Georg: Bill is my best customer, by the way.
Bill: Exactly. *laughs*

Bill: I think it's really just sh*t, especially for, like, newcomer guys. Meaning, to get a record deal that's good and, and to still get your big breakthrough as an artist these days. I think that it's getting harder and harder because people don't invest anything anymore, of course. Well, when I’m looking at our own sh*t record label, then...
Tom: *laughs* Yes, exactly.
Bill: ... [we] can...we know about that.

Bill: Of course we can talk about the last five years especially, so when one has a look at the record industry, then, erm, there are definitely many, many old men sitting in front of their desk crying at the record labels. Meaning, it's proper going downhill. Meaning, it's really been easy to follow [the matter] over the past five years.
Tom: When did one receive Platinum [records] in Germany 10 years ago? That was probably with, like, two million [sold] records or something?
Bill: Probably, yes.
Tom: I think, now Platinum lies at 200,000, right? Or something like that.

Tom: We also made the mistake... What's to say "made the mistake"? I'd probably always do it the same way over and over again. Somehow we've never done some things like, erm, some advertising contracts or something, like, where we were saying "Well, come on. Let's just do it so that, so that we can make some cash somehow." or "Let's just release a Tokio Hotel Lollipop." Or something like that. We really always took care of it somehow [being]... Yes, that we could, like, totally approve of it. And actually we've really focused more on our tours, on our albums and at the same time we actually left everything, everything behind that could be left behind.

Bill: What we wish for...? We definitely wish to go to Asia next. We wish for...
Tom: [That] people buy records again and that the music industry flourishes again. *laughs*
Bill: Exactly. We wish for less illegal downloads for everybody.

Bill: Hey, we're Tokio Hotel and just had an interview with Oliver and it was...
Georg & Tom: Okay... okay...bearable.
Bill: It was super, great, fantastic.
